Hand in Hand…Egypt without Torture

Cairo: 13/6/2004

Serial of torture are still continuous

HRAAP claims the Attorney General the immediate investigation into the incident of the systematic torture which a group from the Muslim Brothers was exposed to at the hand of investigations officers of the State Security and claims putting all detention cells under the supervision of the Ministry of Justice effectively

In a new development, death of Akram Zohair is likely to be a result of torture at the hand of investigations officers. The prison-mates from the Muslim Brothers group, detained in the same case, asserts that they were subjected to the systematic torture at the hand of investigations officer of Nasr city who led them from the precautionary detention in Tura prison, in groups, to the office of the State Security of Nasr city. The torturers were specialist experts in torture whether by beating by hand, legs, or electricity shocks in different parts on their bodies, in addition to their private parts and suspension from hands and threats to rape their daughters and wives, which left apparent evidence in all victims because of this torture and produced grave wounds such as breaks in ribs, which happened to Al-Desouky Al-Sayed Al-Desouky and enuresis as a result of electric shocks which happened to Mohamed Isma'el Sa'd. In addition, the health conditions of Mohamed Osama Mohamed, Mustafa Taher Ali and Mohamed Aamer deteriorated to a great extent, which entails to transfer them to Al-Manial hospital.

The lawyers of HRAAP got this information from victims themselves while presence in the Supreme Prosecution office of the State Security to consider the renewal of their imprisonment. The aforementioned informed the prosecution that they were subjected to torture as the prosecution proved these complaints and interrogated them as victims and decided to detain them for 15 days on investigations in case no. 462/2004, and decided to refer them to the legal medicine to prove the wounds resulted from exposing them to torture. It is worth mentioning that HRAAP discussed some of the victims on which evidence of torture are dreadfully clear. On the other hand, another group of Muslim Brothers is presented to the Supreme Prosecution Office of the State Security to consider renewing their imprisonment.

HRAAP expresses its concern about the continuation of the series of torture and violating the minimum legal rights for prisoners and detainees and call upon the Attorney General to open investigations into death of the engineer Akram Zohair, and incident of torture of the other suspects in case No. 462/2004 in Tura Reception prison to the station of the State Security Investigations and claims to put all detention cells in Egypt under effect and complete supervision of Justice Ministry. On the other hand, we condemn the governmental attempts to exclude the Muslim Brothers movement from the Egyptian political map, asserting its right to existence, and work without restraints and practice its activities officially for the reason that it is an Islamic, political and peaceful movement. So, we claim releasing the all detainees and renew our previous claims to lift the Emergency state imposed since 1981 and releasing all administrative detainees and putting an end to the policy of torture in police stations and the Egyptian prisons and providing the right of forming and issuing newspaper and the right of founding independent associations and filtering it of fetters laid on rights and liberties practice.
