HRAAP claims Habib Al Adly – Minister of Interior – to intervene to allow the detainees families visiting their relatives in Abu Za’bal high security prison

HRAAP expresses sorrowfully and regretfully its deep concern and anxiety as a result of the procedure taken by the ministry of Interior of depriving some political detainees from visitation in the occasion of the Lesser Bairam on November 14-15, 2004 in Abu Za’bal high security prison, although the Ministry of Interior asserted the permission of visitation in the occasion of Lesser Bairam. However, the detainees relatives were prohibited from visitation in the first and second days of the Lesser Bairam without any reasonable reasons, meanwhile HRAAP received information and life testimonies from the relatives of the detainees tell that they have been prohibited from visitation, although they have come from far off regions, which have a negative effect on them because they have not been notified of the prohibition reasons earlier, although the troubles and material difficulties they faced, the prison administration refused to hand over any food or medicine to the detainees.

Although prisons law No. 396/1956, in addition to the international covenants and charters such as the International covenant for civil and political rights, asserted the right to visitation and communication especially in the feasts and prohibiting them from visitation is considered a flagrant breach from the Ministry of Interior.

Therefore, HRAAP appeals to Mr. Habib Al Adly – Minister of Interior – to intervene to allow the prisoners and detainees families to visit their relatives in Abu Za’bal high security prison and detention centers. Meanwhile, HRAAP hopes all detainees to be released.
