Hand in Hand…Egypt without Torture

In a new development concerning the incident of the hunger strike of 56 Egyptian and Palestinian detainees in Al-Gharbaneyat prison that began in 22/5/2004 as a protest against maltreatment in the prison and not providing the appropriate medical care for most of them, although they suffer from serious diseases require intensive care. The health conditions of four detainees have deteriorated as a result of the determination of the Ministry of Interior to detain them although they have got many release orders. The four detainees are Ibrhim Abdel-Hady, Mohamed Hussein Hasan Awwad, Mahmoud Abdel-Ra'of Al-Mabhoh and Mohamed Hussein Hallag. They have been transferred to prison's hospital. They have been negotiated and fell under stress to put an end to strike by some leaders of the prison. All these negotiations failed because the strikers requested to meet a delegation from the ministry of Interior in addition to some representatives of human rights organizations in Al-Gharbaneyat prison to explain reasons of strike.
In this respect, HRAAP submitted today a new complaint to president of Egypt and the Attorney General and the Minister of Interior in addition to similar complaints to the manger of Prison Department and the State Security of Alex and the prime general lawyer in prosecution offices in Alex and the chief of the prosecution office of Burg Al-Arab to investigate quickly into the incident of hunger strike and sending a medical committee to examine the strikers and follow up their health conditions and achieving the procedure of the actual release for the aforementioned according to the decision of the court.
It is worth mentioning that there is no any investigation took place from the side of the General Prosecution concerning this incident in spite of the complaint submitted by the Association on 22/5/2004.
HRAAP are concerned too much to follow up the situation and be assured about the incidents, so it prepares now a fact-finding delegation in Al-Gharbaneyat prison and endeavors to meet some strikers to know more details about the whole matter.
