HRAAP Organizes Its Third Conference:

"Twenty Years after the Establishment of Human Rights Organizations in Egypt"

The Human Rights Association for the Assistance of Prisoners organizes its third conference on 2 and 3 March 2004. The conference title is:

"Twenty Years after the Establishment of Human Rights Organization in Egypt"

The conference will commemorate the passage of 20 years since human rights organizations started operating in Egypt, which coincided with the establishment of the Arab Organization for Human Rights in April 1984. Through the topics the conference seeks to address different angles of this issue, including monitoring the development these organizations underwent in terms of number and types. The topics will also address the effectiveness of the organizations and their ability to reach citizens and the Egyptian street, their effectiveness in facing the state, and the restrictions related to the political, legislative, cultural and social climate in Egypt that these organizations face. Moreover, the topics will address whether these organizations constitute a movement or they are individual organizations. Finally the conference will end with a roundtable to discuss the future vision in the light of international developments on the one hand, and political reform in Egypt on the other.

Speakers, commentators and chairman of sessions will include a select group of specialists, including ambassadors, university professors, legal professionals and researchers from various institutes, in addition to activists from various Egyptian human rights institutions.

The conference will be held on 2 and 3 March 2004 at the Lotus hall in Pyramisa hotel, located opposite the Cairo Sheraton hotel. The conference will start at 9 am on 2 March 2004.

Please confirm attendance to the Human Rights Association for the Assistance of Prisoners by fax or to the administrative coordinator of the conference Ihab Sallam's mobile phone number 012 366 53 16.
